 		Hi All,

Just a question about the rating of the diode to be implemented on a 2kW drsstc.
The mains in my place are 220 volts line to line, and I planned my power supply to produce 650volts DC, what current voltage rating of my diode should i use??? Thanks.

 		Hi,

2kW @ 220V is 9A, but you will not have a power factor of 1, so the current draw will be higher than 9A. To be safe you should probably look for something with a current rating of at least 15A. For voltage, try to find something with a voltage rating of about 800V.

 		I am using 60 amp diodes in my coil, they are pretty low cost TO247 style case. One thing to remember if you slam the coil on from a dead stop the current in the diodes can exceed 200 amps trying to charge the caps. So use a variac to ramp up the voltage. My coil is 120V with a doubler and I am seeing around 9 to 10 amps.

 		The diodes only ever see rectified mains, so in your case a 400V 20A diode should do. You might even be able to get away with 15A, but diodes are cheap, so its nice to have a little headroom.
You might want to search for 600V diodes though, since 600 is a common rating.

 		In a voltage doubler the diodes see twice the peak line voltage. Or the DC output voltage which is the same.

So in 230V land (where the line can go up to 264V) I would use 1000V diodes.

 		Seriesing the diodes should work, but put balancing resistors across them. A single diode is a lot better of course. I have some dual 1700V 30A diodes in TO247 cases from a 3ph motor controller rectifier, one of these would make you a complete doubler.

 		Check the datasheet to see if the diode is avalanche rated. Avalanche rated diodes can be connected in series with no extra components needed.
