Sailboats have a big heavy keel to help keep them upright.

I agree that a horizontal wind could potentially just push the hovercraft to the side, but I wouldn't want to test that out at 3000m lol.

It doesn't look like the craft has any sort of stabilization to it to prevent rolling over, just a few flaps to direct some of the thrust backward. I think if one of the propellors could rotate along the axis of the craft then it could be made to auto-stabilize as well as... you know.. turn.

Maybe the propellers add some sort of gyroscopic effect, or maybe I'm just guessing. Since the mass of the craft is small, maybe the effect plays at least part of the stabilization role.

Not all sailboats, but a lot do yes, not just to help keep them upright, but also to prevent them being blown sideways when sailing 'accross' the wind.

Some of the models in his videos had vanes (like a rudder) mounted under the fan to deflect the blast of air to one side or the other, to counteract roll.

@PB: I agree it looks like the full size prototype is operating in ground effect, but the radio controlled models in the videos on his website (linked to in my first post) definitely were'nt operating in ground effect. They also looked surprisingly stable, but, being models, I suspect they had the C of G a lot lower than would be attainable in a full sized version. (ie lead weights added for stability).

I can't tell if this is the same design, or just very very similar. A video of a bike, not exactly 173mph

It would be safer to fly one of these:

Because it does not have ailerons won't it be prone to rolling to the sides??

Accelerometers and gyros would help, but a third rotor at right angles would assist with stability.

"Bother!" said Pooh, as the Kzinti stardrive needed crude oil as coolant..
