Hi Linas do you think that your celem capacitor is doing any work? The 3 poly caps are 3.5 uf do you think that they are dominant?

it can't hurt.
but in general no, it's less than 10% of current goes from him

I just got two of those 1uf celem's and each one of them can take up to 650A. your inverter would probably work with either capacitors. Have you tried that and what is your Fo un loaded? Do you think just using the celem would work better because of the higher Fo? The reason I'm asking is because I have some of those big poly caps to but I want a higher Fo with my 2 celems

Linas, what temperatures are you seeing on your matching transformer secondary winding? Just curious how your large gauge non-litz and ferrite C-core are handling the power.

Gabriel, with the nature of an SCR (remanning on as long as the circuit is running above the holding current) your only option would be pulse skipping at some point in your circuit. One method is using a simple zero cross detector on each mains leg (or just one if your running single phase) then using a micro controller to sense mains current and skip AC mains pulse by not turing the SCR on for one or more cycles. This would put a little extra strain on your filter caps. This method works quite well and results in little or no loss. In a test on my IH the SCR ran cool with no heat sink while limiting 240 single phase to 1/2 of the normal drawing current.

I eliminated the need for a zero cross detector by using a very slow PWM to control the SCR, when the PWM is at 100% duty cycle the SCR is on full time and thus the unit runs at full current, as the duty cycle is decreased the SCR is not turned on during the low half of the cycle resulting in lower current as less of the mains current is used. We don't care about the SCR on off timing in relation to the AC frequency. The trade off is a small amount of heat generated when the SCR turns back on mid-cycle, throw it on the block with the IGBTs and your good.

Interesting..

It would be very nice and handy to builda SCR controlled supply or a Buck converter directly from the mains, that could control voltage from 0 to 220 or whatever...

(Like the one made by Fluxeon guys):

Core is reasonable warm,i can cool it with blow fan, but i need new primary from 60mm^2 foil, and water cooled secondary. because it's overheating.
for now i stopped this project, last year in university , big jobs ahead frown

Bummer I was hoping your secondary was working well as is. I supposed it would not be to hard to bend copper tube and solder/braze it to the tank capacitor plates then do a 90 or 180 leaving the ends hanging off the edge to allow water hookup.

Good luck on you last year!
