(edit) The upshot is, universities have deteriorated in quality to the point that degrees are now worth less to prospective employers than A levels or GNVQs. This is a direct result of the "must have a degree to work" mentality, when in fact employers care more about experience than qualifications. Result, unemployable near bankrupt graduates as far as the eye can see, because there are hundreds of applicants for the same job and all the low paid jobs are worthless to them due to the level of debt to be repaid by a deadline.
The situation is only going to get worse, I would advise anyone thinking of going to university in this economy not to bother, and take the low paid job "for now" until the economy improve.

From students who are bad with money to species extinction is a pretty big jump, it also has nothing to do with the OP you made.
Patrick, you got it on the nose about being required to take courses that are pretty much useless and unrelated to the degree you are really working at. That was the number one reason I went into trades. In the same time it took to get a degree and accumulate the required debt I bought a jeep and started saving for a house and retirement. Of my friends who went to university the only ones who are working in their field picked their degrees with the job market in mind. The rest of them are working starbucks to pay down their english lit. or political science degrees.

The goal of many of these institutions is not putting out competent graduates, but building up their own ego, pride, and running these campuses like amusement parks with new buildings here and there but crap course work and liberal arts degrees as far as the eye can see. And since the liberal arts degree largely have no value, many of these kids are duped, some though willingly.

"The poor decisions of individuals are not the responsibility of anyone but themselves." The lack of alternatives and also the disinformation they may have acted on are, on the other hand, the responsibility of others.
