Are you using freewheeling diodes on the mosfet's DS juntion to absorb and redirect the inductive kickback? That's what it sounds like to me... exceeding the blockking voltage and shorting the entire fet.

The Mosfets have freewheeling diodes in , but i guess they are to slow , ill bypass the internal freewheeling diode with a schottky diode / ultrafast recovery diode .
