I think Les's circuit could be improved slightly by taking R2 to a DC bias voltage about equal to the UCCs' switching threshold, instead of ground.
Thanks! The performance is quite impressive, given what I have left out. It's about to have an overhaul though, with a full bridge, and all the 5v logic. I don't mind risking a pair of cheap IGBT's, but I'm not too happy about risking four, and I'm not to certain that with a full bridge, that the coil will be reliable enough to show off!
I should have used your comment as the title of the thread, since a few people seemed to have missed the point!
Regarding R2, I see exactly what you're saying, The UCC's IN threshold is quoted as 2v, introducing quite a delay in switching.
On a side note, the driver shown in the first pics on the thread wastes a fair bit of veroboard space. Below is a far more compact version, suitable for stuffing into a much smaller case...
