Anyway, all I want out of it for the time being is a multiplexed fibre data link.
I can see doing it, just to say we did is a very valid reason for doing it! Also a great way to learn more about FPGA's.
One more question from the peanut gallery, what is the max prorogation delay that can be achieved with FPGA's running a Tesla coil algorithm? I ask because I'm curious of the upper frequency limits that the controller could run at. Would a coil running in the MHz range be feasible?

If you're using a Prediktor or a PLL, propagation delay isn't an issue as it can be compensated. However, the system would probably be synchronous: it would run off a clock at say 50 or 100MHz, so the gate drive waveforms could only change state on 20 or 10ns boundaries. That would result in timing jitter relative to the Tesla resonator's resonant frequency.
