They may not be very big, but the streamers are purty anyway.

Dr Resonance Nov 18 2004

This is submitted by Dr Resonance and shows one of his heavyweight commercial coils. 22 ft long sparks. Sec dia was 28 inches. Pri cap was 0.35 uF running at 24.5 kV DC peak.

If you want a new toy, give him a call.

ps I'm not sure that I am happy about ear, eye or finger safety here! But he is probably just a realistic crash-test dummy.

Dr Resonance Nov 18 2004

Another shot of Dr Resonance's coil without the man (is this the mysterious DC).
"Even our Big Bruiser with it's 26 ft. long spark at 26 kVA was only
developing 865 kV! We thought it was over a megaVolt but measurements
provided the truth. Dr. Resonance"

Here's my first homebrew coil setup:
It needs tuning and tidying up a bit, but for the ball park estimate the arcs shown in the bottom picture were pretty cool! Luckly, I've learned alot from this coil and my future coils will be even better! It's a 15-60 setup with 30kv .015 microF cap bank.

Here's a pic of it running, it's not the best, but the only one I have so far. I'm trying to get 4' arcs out of it, but I bet that will take a lof of tuning...right now I'm adjusting RQ gap, toroid size (to about 23.5 pF), and coupling.

Here is one of the three that are part of my art deco series.
I call it the Radical Radio.
Secondary: 9" x 1.5", 34AWG wire.
Primary: 6.5 turns of 10AWG wire on a 3.2" form.
Psu: 5KV,60mA NST.
Tank cap: 9.1nF.
Spark gap: Static - single gap with two 2" x 1" copper pipe.
A separate tuning coil in series with the primary solves the overcoupling problem, and tunes the circuit to resonance.

# 2 from the art deco series is "The Fix".
This was made as a gag gift for a friend of mine that is addicted to Tesla coiling(like most of us on here). He didn't want it so I got stuck with it, but now I am glad that he didn't take it. The appearance of it is very misleading. The secondary is the tiny little red thing on top which is a real syringe. The topload is a brass doorknob. The bottom is a cable spool that houses the OBIT which I only used half of the windings to get 5KV at 20mA. The copper pipe gap is in the PVC pipe on the top of the spool. The problem with this coil is lack of airflow through the gap, so it is fouled after a few minutes of run. I have to loosen a couple of screws and flip the pipe over to clean the gap. It's a really neat performer giving a four inch discharge which is the length of the secondary.

This is the last of the Art Deco coils. The tap point for the primary is built into the tone arm. If you want to "play tunes" with different top loads, you simply move the tone arm to a different part of the record (the primary). Spark length is 19". There is less than two inches of clearence between the NST and the primary. This decreases the performance. The spark length was 22 inches when all the components were all spread out all over the place during the testing phase. This doesn't concern me as this is more of a dynamic sculpture rather than a performer.

Another pictureless mini coil:

This coil is run off the same 7.5kv-30ma NST and it also has the same primary circuit as the other.

The primary is 7t telephone cord flat pancake

Secondary is 940t awg40 on a 3.8"x1.5" vitamin c canister

Topload is a doorknob i found on the ground or a 3" toroid(doorknob looks best). Record set : A nice 5" arc to the palm of my hand! the secondary had weird spots on it so i painted it
wah wah wah new mmc was so powerful that the coil arced alover it'self and self-destructed

BigTess, (well for me anyway)

Power: 2 x 40mA 10Kv NST's
The Primary coil: is wound from 5mm copper tubing held by an acrylic framework, A modified fuse holder allows the tap to be varied.
The Secondary: is wound with 0.4mm diameter enamelled wire onto a 24" long 110mm(4") former made of PVC soil pipe. 1130 Turns.
The Topload: is 2 x 8" diameter mixing bowls.
