Spark gap tesla coil
PSU: 600 VA potential transformer ballasted with two 1 kW waterheaters in parallel.
no safety gap, no filters
secondary: 3"/9.6", 960 turns, 18.93 mH, 4.014 pF
toroid: 3.4"/10.8", 11.77 pF
res freq: 322 kHz
primary: flat primary, 14 turns, taped at 10 turns, 15.16 uH
primary cap: glass window covered with alu foil, for a total capacitance =16 nF: now I am using a 20 nF @ 16 kV MMC
sucker gap
sparks: 2 feet

Dan Strother Oct 2 2004This is my latest, and nicest construct yet. I have deemed it Elysium, since the project just 'came together' and yielded the results I wanted with little fiddling. It's key features include:

Half-bridge of FGH50N6S2D IGBTs

CD4046 based PLL driver electronics (developed by Steve Conner) – this thing is basically immune to upset; I have been able to short the toroid directly to ground with no ill effects.

Adjustable staccato controller – Reduces power consumption and system heating for prolonged runs

No variac required, thanks to the reliability of the PLL and mains-synced turn-on afforded by the staccato controller

Remote dead-man switch operation

Sleek acrylic case

Additional information can be found on my website.

Hi All!

This is my best VTTC.

was born with some pieces of my first VTTC (the first with autotransformer primary) for the occasion of first italian teslathon.

SPECS:

Primary: 52 turns of 2,5 sq-mm cable with PVC insulation wound on 16cm
diameter PVC tube, one tap every turn.
Secondary: 2230 turns of 0.224mm magnet wire wound on 8.2x50cm PVC tube
Feedback: 24 turns of 1 sq-mm, PVC insulated cable wound under the primary
Tank cap: 6.75nF 21kV MMC with 100 MKP-HQ capacitors in series-parallel.
Power supply: 1,1kVA MOT + level shifter + variac
total power: 1520W true power ( measured by double coil wattmeter, filament
power included )
sparklengt: 1-40cm, adjustable
note: fully adjustable via autotransformer primary for maximum voltage
or current in every load conditions

the official schematic is available here Link2

Enjoy! smile

Ciao!
Fabio.
