This is my first DRSSTC. It was built over a couple of weeks in July 2005.
It was wound on a 15"x4.25" secondary with a 13"x4" topload.
Primary capacitance of 186nf.
It uses a full bridge of 40n60s, has a direct feedback driver with soft switching, overcurrent protection, adjustable deadtime, and a fiber optic driven interrupter.

Hi,

Sort of a "test post for newbee me here"...

Here is the "first" OLTC cheesey

Cheers,

Terry

An old picture of my VTTC and some less commonly seen streamers. I can't believe they're almost 3 years old. Hasn't been fired for at least 2 years, doh! I'll have to get back into this stuff.

Here is my small DRSSTC: 3.5"x9" secondary form. 32AWG magnet wire. Two 1500uf 250VDC caps with two diodes form the voltage doubler. Halfbridge of 30N60A4D. Primary current feedback with OCD as well. Maximum length discharge is about 20". This coil has provided many hours of runtime and has now been retired. I used it as a test bed and am working on Minime2 using what I learned on this one.

It's about time my latest coil had a place in this thread.

This is my coil, nicknamed 'Triangular Cellulation'. Don't ask why!

Anyway it runs at well over 1Mhz, due to the rather heavy gauge wire on the secondary. It is PLL driven, and has a halfbridge of IRFP460s for the power output stage. Max output currently is just under under 4" to air, with 110V into the halfbridge. Haven't tried it directly on the mains yet.

The secondary coil is about 2" diameter, just to give you an idea on the size of this thing. It isn't tiny, but it is a rather small coil. Quite a nice size really!

Future plans - Add an interrupter, and make it into a DRSSTC.

Check out the video also: Here, 2.2MB MPEG1

My mini spark gap coil cheesey

This is the first spark gap coil I have constructed. It's powered by a monitor flyback, using the ZVS circuit. At 24 volts in to the ZVS, I am getting about 3" maximum streamers.

Uses a tank cap of approx 4nF, 4 beer bottle caps. The spark gap is made of 3 brass nuts.

Video: 2.8MB MPEG1

Edit: The coil now has a webpage on my site (see sig)

I've had my avatar my rotary spark gap since the old 4hv, yet I never posted my TC since I never tried turning it on until a bit ago. I have a home made capacitor that seems to be not holding a charge, but heres a pic of the coil anyway. 10.5kV Franceformer @ 30mA.

A big high power SSTC. Produces 18" sparks (so far) in CW mode, and 33" sparks in full-wave rectified mode (no filtering). Its a power hog, pulling up to 30A on the 240V line. Uses a bridge of IXFN80N50 MOSFETs, which never get more than a few degrees above ambient. The primary and secondary are from my magnifier experiments (secondary is 12.75"x20" with .035" diameter wire). The driver is a rip-off of Steve Conners PLL driver that i built 2 years ago. All the parts were already on-hand except the base which i put together in an hour or so, so this coil was built in just a day (it was mostly wiring and tuning). Its interesting to note that the TC load is a constant current sink. Once about a 3" breakout is achieved, the primary current is fixed from then on (typically 24Apk in CW mode, and 50Apk in unfiltered mode because i reduce the primary from 10 turns to 5 turns). So bridge dissipation is pretty much the same at 15% input as it is at 100% input (only switching losses increase). Check out the pictures and videos here:

Here is my new drsstc6

Primary: 7 Turns of 1/4" copper tubing with an diameter of 10"
Secondary: 6"x19" wound with 0,3mm
Toroid: 4"x16" alu ducting pipe smoothed and covered with alutape
MMC: 220nF 8kV
Bridge: Fullbridge of 40n60s running at 310V dc
Longest streamer so far: 48"

The drsstc6 is my first primary feedback drsstc. the driver has a onboard overcurrent detection set to 550A. interrupter input is around 200bps and 120yS on Time

Well, I might as well put the first SISG (SIDAC IGBT Spark Gap) TC here. The driver was developed by Terry Fritz and details are here. They work MUCH better than SIDAC's alone that I experimented with last year.
Each driver fires at 900V to be within the IGBT 1200V rating. Multiple drivers are simple daisy chained to reach the desired firing voltage eg 12kV NST requires 16 stages which adds to cost. However it does open the way for using lower voltages in the MOT range where real spark gaps don't work well.
Terry and Mark have coils with sparks in the 30-40 inch range now.
Don't even ask about the details of this coil with it's massive 1 inch sparks and huge copper tube primary. It is running off 900V with one stage.
Just to be first with an SISG on this thread....
Peter
