My first SSTC. I hooked up my Royer type circuit using 20A microwave oven IGBT's running on 30 V 10A. Primary is 1+1 turn of heavy Litz wire and for fun my secondary is my 18 x 48 inch 1100 turn coil. Resonant frequency is only 38kHz which is so low you could probably run it with SCR's. Spark initiates at 1/2 inch and the power arc goes to about 4 inches which is a bit like an NST in performance. Generally underwhelming though, given the secondary size.
I will update the pics if things improve. (Like running 250V interrupted with my 1200V 600A IGBT's with a proper primary setup).

The full setup. Even with this low voltage there is a fair bit of capacitative coupling to me standing this close. Note the poorly coupled and diminutive primary.

i guess i might as well add my big tes here so here it is, input-15kv 30ma nst 20.4nf mmc (still way too small) not too impressive results but im happy with them(11")

My 3" sgtc. This was my first coil with decent performance. The secondary is wound with 10" of 23awg. Primary is a 12-turn flat spiral. The coil runs off of a 15/30 nst with three wine bottle caps, but an MMC is in the mail and on its way. At the moment, max spark is 18".

Here is a project that I need to go back to, and redesign after I get tired of the solid state stuff. This is a tube coil employing a 304TL that was completely designed wrong. The neat thing about it is that it makes up for its lack of spark length with power arcs that are hotter than the average VTTC. It's like flames comming out of the torroid! This thing is also an induction heater due to massive primary currents. The little ground screw at the bottom of the secondary got so hot that it burned the wooden support near the screw. You can see the SGTC in the bacckground. It is 60KHz lower than the VTTC, but when I ran the VTTC, some arcing was going on in the SGTC somewhere, and I could hear it. I also smelled wood burning, so I would have to move the SGTC out of the room when I ran the tube coil! My friend was getting RF burns off of everything he touched in my room. Playing with this coil is very dangerous because of all the RF radiation it produces! I worry about the possibility of a hidden fire starting somewhere.
