Check out the inverting converter and the Cuk and SEPIC topologies. Also read the Wikipedia article on the buck-boost converter.
As far as the control aspect is concerned, converters fall into two categories: ones with a RHP zero and ones without. The inverting and boost converters have a RHP zero, and I can't remember how the Cuk and SEPIC behave.
Inductorless circuits are all very well, but they're limited to 50% conversion efficiency.
If none of this meant anything to you, you're in the wrong job.
