As a group project, I had an idea for an Arena expansion of sorts.

I had this thought: the modern dungeon in minecraft doesn't have enough booby-traps. As well, fighting through them is entertaining. Similar to how I made the mob arena, I thought we could make a stronghold/dungeon area. But to make things more interesting, the arena is lined with TNT that will go off if the bomb isn't defused at the end of the arena.

The TNT will fall into water, making it effective on mobs and players but not the structure. I started testing out tnt configurations in the arena but have not been able to prevent a YxYx1 size layer from launching any blocks. (Don't worry, I've been rolling back TNT damage from launched blocks as I go along).

I'm thinking it should be made multi-level, with mob and arrow dispensers spread throughout. Players would be limited in mining too much with bedrock and obsidian.

Anyone interested in working on this with me?

Smcerm and I ended up starting the dungeon challenge. I ended up making most of it out of obsidian to force the contestant through the danger. I finished what I think would be safe to call version one.
I have most of it set to go for the first player, except for the TNT and mob dispensing (those need a little bit more planning I think).
It can be found in the back area of the arena.

Cheers,

-Jimmy

Well it appears an update to 1.3.1 was successful!
I did have to remove iConomy and chest shops, but these were never setup right anyways. I also noticed iConomy is no longer in development, and will be looking at alternatives.

If anyone notices any problems please don't hesitate to tell me. I still have everything backed up!

Cheers,

-Jimmy

Others and myself have been thinking... we need a community project.
The difficulty is while that most people can work as they please, the organizer would have a lot to do.
I have this thought though: what if we expanded upon the maze I have been working on, but instead of one big mess like it's becoming (take a look yourself in the creative world), have volunteers each make a section of it then we can piece them together later with WorldEdit, like a puzzle.
Each section would just have to meet a few basic constraints, such as size, some minor redstone limitations, and entrance/exit placement.
Once the original requirements have been established, then each person can just work on their section until they're ready, then they can be pieced back together.

Just a thought. Things are a little dry on the server, might jazz things up a bit.

Cheers,

-Jimmy

That sounds like a good idea. I'm certainly willing to volunteer - anyone else?

I like the idea of such a project

A community created maze could be nice.. what would also be cool is portals redirecting to someone's maze parts, making some kind of infinite loop ^^

Is this still in place?

I'm still up for people to work on this, but so far only smcerm and you have really responded.
I'm trying to remember, had I given you permissions on the server?

Unrelated, but I've recently been experiencing near-unbearable lag on the server. I checked, and my ping was about 800 ms. This wasn't an issue a few months ago.

I live on the US east coast, if that makes a difference.

I'm on the east coast for work as well, and I'm not getting near that bad.

Run these speedtests on the server and let me know the overall results (may be a little more accurate than minecraft, or at least determine if its consistent)

(I used to be a speedtest.net host, but they used too much bandwidth for "free" advertising. The apps are still there though)
