I don't know if you guys have seen this before, but thought those in the UK might find it interesting:
It's cool to watch the AC mains frequency varying with supply and demand.
-Richie,
PS. Apparently it uses "reciprocal counting" in order to determine the supply frequency to many decimal places after only a second or two of measurement time.
There was one time when I switched on a terminal in the lab at the University, all the light went out. Funny thing was that shortly after I switched it off the lights went back on. There was no smoke/sparks etc coming from that terminal.
I read the campus newspaper that there was a blackout that day. Not sure if that extra load kicked the entire block off grid because of my unusual "luck" or my timing. ;)

One of the instruments I built at work has a digital PLL that tracks the mains frequency. As a test, I got it to print the value to 3 decimal places, and checked it against that site. It agrees pretty well, except the site lagged my readings by about 5 seconds.

hmm, ive got a idea, everyone of us turn on our most powerful transformers at the same time and see if we can get it to sway c:
Too bad I can’t join D: but better idea. Everyone plug in all your power equipment, and turn them on. Then turn on all your lights/appliances. Then everyone shuts down their main breakers. Then on a predefined time, you all flip your breakers back on! Your sure to put the meter to 49 if you have a few people.

bingo, the queens diamond jublee, when does it start being officialy broadcast?
Congratulations! you have just given me a reason to actually give a damn what time the show kicks off. Incidentally, if you get very bored, you can compare it against this one.

I remember visiting Dinorwig in Wales, which is a pumped storage hydroelectric plant designed to meet instant demand, just by opening a big valve.
The example they gave during the presentation was the commercial break of Eastenders I think, on go all the kettles and if the mains frequency drops enough then it rocks the whole mountain.
I've been watching the meter for the last few minutes, over a period of about 5 minutes from 9.55pm onwards it quickly changed from a stable 49.8Hz to 50.1Hz
