The Varroa Destructor mite has been around in the UK since the early 90's - its nothing new - two approaches for dealing with it - a mix of prophylactic, curative & palliative approaches which basically means intervention from the bee-keeper, and most promisingly for the longer term, a genetic approach that involves selectively breeding bees for natural resistance to the mite. The real issue with UK bees is they have no natural resistance so that most feral colonies have now died out...
If your colonies are managed correctly, there is no reason that varroa should destroy them - it does happen - a commercial bee-keeper may have several 100 colonies and some will be lost, but it tends to be a combination of events - if a colony goes into winter, weak, diseased, or already with a heavy infestation of varroa and they don't respond to treatment, they might not survive the winter... but there are a raft of reasons colonies die - they are livestock and get ill and can be impacted by outside events - woodpeckers, wax moth, badgers, mice etc. etc. - all sorts of things can happen.
Colony Collapse Disorder is still not well understood but insecticides and varroa MAY be contributory factors - its far from certain. Some insecticides can most certainly destroy a colony, but CCD appears to a complex chain of events which may well/seems to differ between locations.
