capacitor bank help

im using the tesla Capacitor Cornell-Dubillier 942C20P15K-F and i need it to be 9.3nf how many capacitors and in what arrangement should they be? (please post a diagram PLEASE)

That depends on what voltage rating you need. What is your power supply voltage?

Well you could use 16 of them in series and that would put you right there. Comes out to 9.37n actually. And they would be good for 32kV.

You would need at least 6 in series eitherway. Because they are only rated at 2kV so need to series up enough to make the voltage handling capability high enough to handle 8kV. The 8kV is RMS voltage and your cap bank needs to handle the peak of that which is 11kV.

edit:
You could also make up four banks like that and put 2 banks in series, and another two banks in series and then parallel those banks and you would get a little more bang out of them however it will take a lot more caps.

Yes basically that would give you 32 capacitors in series, and then you add in parallel to that another set of the 32 in series. You would therefore need 64 capacitors in total.

So taking the orginal 16 capacitors in series and then adding another 16 in series reduces the original capacitor value by 1/2. Now adding the second string of 32 in parallel doubles the capacitor value bringing the total capacitance back up to 9.3nF.

the formula is this:

Series capacitors: 1 / (1/C1 + 1 / C2...1/Cn)

Parallel capacitors: C1 + C2 + ...Cn

Energy in joules:

E=.5 X CV^2

Where E = energy in joules.
