I started tinkering with electronics when I was six, built my first diode laser at 8, built my first CW Multiplier at 9, and was doing mains repairs by age 11.

I grew up in NJ, and you would think the schools are pretty decent given how high the taxes are and how well funded the schools are from them. It was pathetic, and this was 10+ years ago (no iPods, etc). I often found myself correcting my science teachers, not just with electronics, but physics and chemistry too. I never got to go to college due to family reasons, but would love to go back to school for EE or RFE. I'm teaching myself from old used EE textbooks in my spare time now. Being a Ham helps too.

I live in northern MI now with my wife, and the schools up here are even worse. Most folks here don't know why a wire conducts electricity, and think that equivalently colored string will work instead of wires.

"Nobody could even figure out that a lamp has 2 terminals and that both have to be connected for it to light up. What do you all think of this situation"

The answer lies in the makeup of the class, where they are from, and what cultural exposure
to technology is there. That the class has achieved placement in the 9th level does indicate
a very high level of education, by global standards.

If you want to judge the quality of education, shouldn't you see how well the kids understand the nature of a circuit at the end of the lesson, rather than the start?

Just because you are ahead of the game doesn't mean that the schooling is bad.

Actually, people should be tested 3 months after the course is over...

...you should know 95% of people would fail to even remember the course name...

I knew a professor who would add this bonus question on exams to be funny...
He also used to get the TAs to astroturf ratemyprofessors a few weeks before registration opened.

That course's workload was epic...
.. people who tried to cram for exams forgot some courses are accumulative.
LOL

Luces, wait till you get to college kiddo!

There are EE's and ME's that couldnt drill a hole in a sheet of metal, yet they are scheduled to graduate in 5 weeks.

Ive seen ME's, and EE's students ready to graduate and yet couldnt tell the difference between stainless and aluminum plate, its scary here in California sometimes.

And some graduating EE's have asked me how timers are supposed to be set up, or why they have to read a datasheet and if id read it for them. (While Im not even close to graduating!)

Just because someone has a degree, that doesnt mean they're competent.
(I hope i didnt make any grammer eeeros.)
