Indeed, thats a wise thing to do.
I've done this before with a mains transformer, took it apart while still plugged in aged about 14. Guess what, no shocks but noticed that the transformer was still buzzing and realised before touching anything live.

Also had a NiMH battery short out on my desk, that scared the hell out of me.
Must have been metal swarf between the casing and +V, because it damn near glowed white hot before it went out of the window.

read more carefully.
He said it was a homemade transformer, so it could have been outputting much more current than a typical flyback.

Glad you're alright Dri0m

yep, i had about 50mA on output

Probably not my stupidest but...

Fried my first power fet today. I've always been super careful with them when it comes to ESD and Thermal overload.. but this was the first time I've used one for a Tesla Coil... once I saw the output my excitement made me lose track of time and I cooked it! I had it on a small TO-220 heatsink which should have kept it cool for about 10 seconds I figured. Well, I didn't realise what I had done until the magic smoke came out. IRFP460 in the grave because I was staring at my SSTC with slack-jawed enthusiasm.

Thankfully I had the forethought to order more than I needed and I have 2 spares. New one is being thermal epoxied on to a much larger heatsink as I type this.
