Conundrum, you should try making some IR goggles (easy to google for, they use gel lighting filters). I made a pair and it is amazing how much those goggles let you see. I have an IR camera and other then the brightness you see almost the same with the goggles as with an IR only digital camera.

Or you can make your own. Just did an experiment here with my (broken) webcam, Staedtler Lumocolor Permanent F pen (Dry Safe) and a sheet of clear plastic from a DVD case.
Amazingly, nearly completely IR transparent but lets through next to no visible light. No wonder it didn't work as an optical interruptor (facepalm)
Transmission spectrometry data to follow... Seems pretty good, as the picture looks as bright as normal but no colour at all. Presumably only IR light is getting through the filters+pen ink, maybe should also try lasering the camera to increase its sensitivity still further.
