Hey all. I just had a break in at my house today and got my laptop and some other electronic gadgets stolen. (Luckily none of my test equipment got stolen)

So... Looks like its time to go shopping for a new laptop. Anyone have any suggestions for sub $1000 laptops? Windows only please.

Just bough a Toshiba P740 for my girl, with the dedicated graphics, extra RAM and faster hard drive. She love it. Main use is architectural CAD softwares. U$899,00.

After having dell, HP, Acer.. When I buy a personal laptop, its toshiba. Some models they have are really tough! But if you are looking for design, go to some place else.

For the time being, get a cheap ass one. Windows 8 is coming out soon. I have the test version. Once it comes out, get a laptop with a touch screen. Windows 8 is freaking AWESOME.

I go for HP or Compaq every time.

Does everything you want a laptop to do, for £300.

After all, if you want processor power, build a desktop. smile

Over the past 10 years, I have had two laptops.

Dell Inspiron 8600 and Dell XPS 15.

Only problem I ever had, dvd drive was defective on the inspiron, got a new by UPS the day after I called. Thumbs up for Dell from here.

There are many good laptops, but the real question is what are you wanting to use it for? Gaming general computing or cpu intensive activities? I personally own a acer 5750 and love it

A mid-level Acer usually offers the best value
Toshiba usually offers the most features (ports etc.)
Intel based Apple books are better for non-technical people

Sony offers the most grief
HP has no warranty coverage for cracked LCD screens (bad design this year)

I have never heard anything good about HP or Acer. I know multiple people with failed HP laptops and couple with bad Acer laptops. Including one Acer laptop that started spewing flames when it was turned sideways :P

I had to recommend a laptop to my GF and I ended up recommending an Asus. Haven't heard too much bad about them. The first Asus she got had a faulty wifi card though... I even opened the machine (no seal) and reinserted the card but it didn't help. It was all good after a quick visit to the warranty though.

All in all all laptops are pretty crappy. :P
