Il will keep this short. If you want more details, look at my new thread "ucc37322 lights on fire!!??". The igbts work incredibly well, but I guess I can't judge because I haven't used anything else. First light provided 2-3 inch sparks with no tuning or modification. It's probably way out of tune too.

Mine are also 30n60's (HGTG30N60B3D). Do you have a dual channel oscilloscope to tune with?

No, but my school does. I plan on bringing it there to finish it. But now that you say that, I have to ask. How do you prevent latchup? I have had 4 igbts latch up do far. I am thinking of just switching over to some mosfets because this is getting annoying. The first two igbts worked for a while then dropped dead. Then I changed the parts in the power section. This shouldn't have had an effect, but now when I power it on I hear maybe one spark then they latch up again.

If they aren't overheating then it is probably over-voltage. IGBTs are far more susceptible to over-voltage that mosfets. Mosfets avalanche (if the voltage is too high it basically conducts and dissipates it as heat) so they are less prone to failure in the case of over-voltage. Are your IGBTs co-packaged with a free-wheeling diode? If not then they need an external diode in anti-parallel with the mosfet.

In order for it to actually run class E you must tune it so that the voltage across the shunt capacitor crosses 0v at the same time as the voltage on the mosfet's gate. Steve Ward explained it well on his site, and you can see what the waveform's should look like. If it isn't class-E it will be far less efficient.

i also use the hgtg30n60b3d igbt. i didn't think over-current was the problem because they only heat during cw mode anyways, and not very much. when i switch over to a 12v bridge, it works just fine(minus the spark length of coarse). my igbts have the reverse diode, so reverse voltage shouldn't be the problem. so i guess that it must be over voltage. when running 48v, it worked sometimes but not for long... so what should i do? in your coil what did you use if you had this problem? i have some 220v tvs laying around.

Wow Arcstarter. Been a while since you've posted anything on here! Nice to see you back.

Regarding the SSTC, I've tried building a Class E coil before... they're an absolute pain to tune into correct Class E operation though. :/
