I would go with 100KHz or less if possible. The IGBTs will be much happier down at that frequency.
As for coil size you should be able to get it at or under 100KHz with 18" or less. My small twin DRSSTCs use 4.5x18 secondaries and have a fres of about 91KHz. This was using 32 AWG wire.

My biggest problem is going to be finding some thick PVC. There are no big hardware depots around me. I plan to use somewhere around 30 awg wire on a 4-6" diameter former which will easily drop the fres down that low. I am also somewhat skeptical about the topload though as well.(if anyone has any ~12*3.5 torroids they want to give away) I have a friend at wpi that said he could help me out there, but he hasn't since responded...
