Hi

Thanks you two :) , One thing i have noticed is , even after tube has warmed up for 5 minuits ( long time i know ) , the arcs always start of small and over 30 seconds or so grow to normal size .

Its like as the tank capacitors warm up ; so the arcs get bigger .

Good luck on your 811a build :D

My gu-81m vttc did the same thing. I found it was because it was the wrong type capacitor. The spark length didn't really suffer, but the capacitor heated badly and it soon died

Hmm guess that isn't good then ; I purchased the capacitors from
On here and I've herd they are fine for VTTC coils , 780pf each at 30kv but they are fairly physically big considering size . They seem to get warm but don't change temp after the " warm up " at the start .
I did Plan on making a larger VTTC using these
Capacitors too .... I'll see what happens to the capacitors I guess .

Hi again TwirlyWhirly555 smile

I just finished my coil, it works great but I encounter same heating problems as you (secondary and tube) Link2

I just saw you solved your heating problems, but you reduced your coil performance from 4-5" streamers down to 3"...

You may want to have a look at Arcstarter's coil Link2 posted here Link2 , it is very close to ours ( in fact I tried to reproduce it wink ) and runs cool at full power...I am trying to understand what makes the difference....

That happened to me too, and you are correct. As the capacitors heat up, their value changes, bringing your coil into tune.

I made my own tank capacitor using Al foil, 1/8" glass plate and varnish. However, a digital capacitance meter is a must if you go this route.
