I was looking at the schematic of Steve Ward's MIDI controller. Does anybody know what the selection switch is for?

Thanks.

Hi ajacks504. I've noticed that you are building Steve Ward's midi controller. Have you finished it and are you having any problems in getting it to operate properly?
I have built and programed it but it won't boot up when it first starts. When playing a midi file I have to switch the 5V supply on and off quickly many times until it starts playing correctly. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Claude.

Claude, I've built it, but not used it, I just programmed it the other day. I'll let you know when I try it.

Does anyone know what fuse bits to use?

Hi ajacks 504. Steve's earlier post says to set the external crystal oscillator to greater than 8Mhz and disable brownout detection. This is what I did. What programmer did you use to programme the microcontroller?

Claude.

Hi Claude,

I used TinyISP and avrdude from windows:

Link2

like this:

avrdude -c usbtiny -p
m168 -U tcmaster.hex

avrdude: AVR device initialized and ready to accept instructions

Reading | ################################################## | 100% 0.02s

avrdude: Device signature = 0x1e9406
avrdude: NOTE: FLASH memory has been specified, an erase cycle will be performed

To disable this feature, specify the -D option.
avrdude: erasing chip
avrdude: reading input file "tcmaster.hex"
avrdude: input file tcmaster.hex auto detected as Intel Hex
avrdude: writing flash (3742 bytes):

Writing | ################################################## | 100% 6.83s

avrdude: 3742 bytes of flash written
avrdude: verifying flash memory against tcmaster.hex:
avrdude: load data flash data from input file tcmaster.hex:
avrdude: input file tcmaster.hex auto detected as Intel Hex
avrdude: input file tcmaster.hex contains 3742 bytes
avrdude: reading on-chip flash data:

Reading | ################################################## | 100% 6.22s

avrdude: verifying ...
avrdude: 3742 bytes of flash verified

avrdude: safemode: Fuses OK

avrdude done. Thank you.

I think I'll need to go back and burn the fuse bits. What did you use?

Hi Ajacks504.
For the fuse bits I disabled brownout protection and set Ext. Crystal Osc Frequency 8.0-Mhz start up time Pwrdwn/Reset 16K CK/14CK+4.1ms.
I've tried other various settings but still having the same problem.
I used a serial programmer with Ponyprog software. I"ve used this programmer before and it's been ok so I don't know what's going on this time.

AVR Burn-O-Mat has a great fuse calculator in it, whether you chose to actually flash with it or not. If you want to flash with command line or some other app, it gives the fuse bits to use.

I use an arduino mega board as a flasher (although any of the typical arduino boards would work). I've not seen very many people do this, and I'm not sure why. If you have an arduino laying around, it means you have a free ISP! Just open up the arduino IDE and in examples there is ArduinoISP project. Flash this to the board you want to use as an ISP, and there it is for free, and easy to use.

I just break out MOSI/MISO/SCK/Reset on all the boards I make to a pin header and connect it up whenever I need to program.

Well somehow I have killed my atmel with bad fuses, I can't get it to show up in avrdude anymore...

Anyone have any tips that can save me some reading?
