Oh, yes sorry. What I meant was that I wasn't testing my bridge and interupter... What's with my communication!? Anyways ajacks504: no, it's my fault, and it's no big deal :) And teravolt: can you clarify? Do you mean to bypass the filtering and just input the 555/d flip signal into the first logic gate?

this could be a test jig. I blieve that one of the thing you are looking for. by what you are calling filtering the input to the zero cross yes. what does your scematic look like if i may.

its similar to steve wards drsstc 3 original sch. and yes i am shouting when i say this: I GOT A SIGNAL GENERATOR!!! had to get that out of the way. here is the story. my high school physics teacher had a broken eico 379 that seemed to be beyond repair. so he gave it to me, and i fixed it just now. so i don't think i will need that circuit anymore. all it does is make sure that the signal is exactly 50% duty correct? that may be a 555 problem, but not with a sig gen. it does 20Hz-2MHz sine, or 20Hz-200Khz square.
and one other question? if i use it to find the res frequency of my secondary, can i use the sin wave as the signal? on all the resonance finders i have seen, people use square waves. theoretically, it doesn't do any difference...

can i use the sin wave as the signal? Yes a sign wave is just a purer wave form and less harmonics and you can use ither. The secondary or primary of a tesla coil doesn't care prity much doesn't care about frequencys above its fundimental. if you had access to a scope you would be able to see this. since your only concerned about the resonant peeks and there amplitude you may be able to make a circuit to see this. I haven't tested this you will have to bread board it.

Yep, a sine is theoretically better since it only carries the fundamental. Think of a square wave of a summation of multiple sines that approximate a square, so it contains multiple frequencies (mostly 3rd and 5th).
