Just a quick question. I was looking over the steve ward SSTC and i honestly cant find much as to how to put audio on it the coil. i understand that u could use the 555 timer chip but id only play 1 tone. Now iv been searching all over the internet for a few hours more or less all day im going to be building one but before i get into it i want to make sure i can do some Pulse with modulation with a micro controller. The problem is im not sure with micro controller would have the easyest and best result and how to put it in the circuit or if its even possible. Already built a SGTC thinking i could play music it off. How i was very wrong on this i want a music tesla coil is it possible with this circuit if i can get any help

I am using the same sstc as the one in the schematic. I use an Arduino for playing ringtones like this Link2 if this is what your looking for i may beable to help.

To Micheal chen Iv seen that schematic the reason i dont want to use that other schematic is that 1. its 240 volts i dont want to have to tap into my panel. 2. i want to be able to use my current primary and secondary from my Spark gap tesla coil which if u look it has multiple coils and inputs on it.

To HB yes this is more or less what im looking for as long i can say put other audio such as say star wars imperial march song then that is exactly what im looking for. Id need help on figuring out how to set up the arduino into the steve ward schematic by taking out the 555 chip and integrating the arduino into it. I understand there is coding and programming to do with this controller that will be the next step once i can start building it.

I am not referring to the schematic as a whole, but to the audio modulation circuit in the lower right corner. This segment is meant to replace the interrupter in your sstc. Besides, the difference between 120v and 240v is basically the substitution of the Mosfets for higher rated ones (voltage wise).

And for your second point, they actually use equal secondaries. There are two schematics in that page, both are part of the circuit.

Some background questions to have a general idea of your experience.
-Have you ever made a SSTC?
-Have you ever programmed a micro?

I redid the schematic with what i currently use. Dunno if its the best solution but for me it works well Link2 I keep the arduino uno in a different room atm and run wires out to the sstc, been trying to get some home made fiber optics going but it is being stubborn.
The code that works best so far i can send to an email if you pm me. I do have different code to store multiple songs and switch with a button but i think the buttons are being interfered with because its directly connected to the sstc so it hits the stop button itself on the arduino as soon as the sstc is fired up but i can give you that code to if you wanna experiment.

Edit: I suggest building the circuit as in the original and get it working good and then you can add the second 74hc14 for the audio mod and have a switch to use the interupter or the audio.

In order to modulate the signal, all you have to do is send your audio (convertered to 5V square waves) to the enable pins on the drivers. HB, you don't need those diodes and inverters as you are driving it straight from your arduino.

Probably best to listen to Turkey i'm still pretty new to making SSTC's. I had very little experience when i put it all together so i guess i added a few extra parts tinkering with it. And to answer your question yes you can play pretty much anything that is written as a RTTTL ringtone.

Thank you! Thank you! HB the plan im going to use instead of making another circuit for the Audio modulation ill use my bread board that can supply the necessary voltages to feed the 74hc14 and arduino and possibly add the circuit later unless i absolutely need the circuit for the 74hc14 and arduino to work Which Arduino did u purchase?. i cant help but notice that the common is says that it is not grounded to the mains ground so would only use the common off the secondary transformer due to it being isolated correct?

the antenna part isnt very clear as far as i have seen people put them about 1 foot away from the coil and use a solid wire about 5-8inchs high? could use some clarification so i dont fry my circuit.

As to michael chan question

1. i have never built a SSTC before (Currently own a SGTC with 8 inch sparks)
2. i have never programmed a micro? ( i am a 3rd electrician in college i have done PLC and other programming but not a micro yet) All the help or tips on SSTC or doing the programing is very appreciated :) I am a quick learner and very determined with good electrical knowledge but not as much electronics wise

if you dont want to put the adruino in another room as HB sugjests you should put in a metal box and then use a fiber. you could even mount your protoboard in a box with a power supply or tansformer if your circuit has regulation built in.the box will act to shield it from the tesla.
