The old obsolete CDV710 unit with a built in modified inverter (only two 1.5v D-cells needed.)

Can’t recall why its still around really. It was only designed for mid range Gamma level detection.

Dosimeters?Neato!

Well, the thorianite came in the mail...Looks like some lil iron pebble...Its pretty heavy for being so small(about size of a small marble)...Very hard!

Now I just need my silver activated zinc sulfide...I will let everyone here know how it works!I hope this thorianite will work...I have no idea of its quality, but the seller said it read 6000cpm on his geiger...I hear that means nothing, as each counter has its own cmp rate?He doesnt know the mr?hr...But im hoping LOW, as I just want strong alphas, and ideally nothing else(i do know that wont be the case). If all else fails, I will just pull off the smoke alarm from the wall, and rip out its americium...I just wanted to try it out with some real ore 1st!...If thorianite is about 88% thorium, then my sample should be around 7grams of actual thorium?

There is a chance I may have a vial of something that I will not mention, as it deffinately will raise some alarms here...(hint, think glowing watch hands!)...No worries, everything is kept in closet, surrounded by lead....

Reads 0 to 200 r; man at 50 r you are cooked. At 200, I guess they can reset the CD V-742 back to zero and give to the next person in line, uggggggggggggg!

Depends on the type of radiation you are exposed to. Gamma or x-ray radiation has a relative biological effectiveness of one, meaning 50r translates to a dose of 50 rems. You might not even notice the effects of a dose that low, or pass it off as the flu. Recovery in the short term is almost guaranteed. Even 200r of gamma or x-ray radiation doesn't spell certain death, it's considered 10% lethal assuming no medical intervention takes place.

Change it to fast neutrons however, and you're singing a different tune. RBE of fast neutrons is 10. That's a dose of 500 rems and 2000 rems respectively. You might survive the first, with quick medical intervention, but death in the second case is almost certain.

There go my plans of obtaining some beryllium and firing my all too low level alpha source at it!

About 2 years ago, the only thing that stopped me from total replication of that book was the fact that Thoriated lantern mantles were taken off the market, I only managed to get 10. However, I still have the bag of americanium.... cheesey
