Ahhh I get it now :)

I thought you were talking about the resistors above.

I ended with an IRFP350. My supplier didn't have a IRFP250 so I asked for a IRFP260 and they didn't have that either so I ended up with a very hefty IRFP350. Actually I came up with 577 suitable replacements for the IRFP250 :) but that was after I had the 360 already.

I just didn't know what I was looking for so I tried to find what was shown in the schematics.

I'm still not getting the Arc's others are. Guess I have some fine tuning todo. Then I'll try a ZVS or something more complex :) Just because :)

Probably closer to five pounds. I have two ran them in parallel for one quick trial but I was in the midst of changing some things.

I had about 20 winds on the primary but I reduced as per Zn earlier suggestion. Arc was little less. Ill try it at 20 tomorrow and see what happens.

Will swap out the pots as well for 50s

Did you try adjusting both the pots whilst drawing arcs? it can take a while to find the "right" spot.

Also try swapping the polarity of the connections going to the primary coil as it will only work best one way.

HI Alex,

I did switich the connections on the primary and found the "better" connection.

I played with both pots, one at a time and both together.

I went to 25 turns on the primary, when I reduced it to 10 the arc became smaller as well.

I get about 1.25 to 1.5 cm arc and quite fine. Not sure what that might translate into volts.

Ran the 2 batteries in parallel

Still have to switch out the pots.

Would it be possible for you to send me the schematics you used for your 555 and ZVS supply?

Gord

Do you mean what power supply did I use? if so I just used lead acid battery's, for the ZVS I used 3 in series for 36v but that is too much for a lift and the current is deadly. For the 555 I only ever used 12v.

The schematic is here Link2 except I swapped the 10k and 9k pots to 50k ones. Also change the gate resistor from 50 ohm to 22 ohm, the 555 might get warm but it helps the MOSFET switch better.

For the ZVS I followed this Link2

There is also a simplified graphical schematic here Link2

If you wanted to go further then I recommend this Link2 as it greatly reduces MOSFET heating and if you use 24v or more for the flyback you can get some pretty decent voltage from it which is perfect for a lifter. On 36v input and 5 primary coil turns I could get arcs igniting when the electrodes were 3 inch's apart!

Hope you find these links useful,

Alex.

That's great thank you Alex..

Other quickie question regarding the Capacitors, are they ceramic, electrolytic? one of each? and what might the voltage be on them?

Cheers and thanks..

Bedtime where I am.

On the 555 driver? ceramic caps will be fine, any voltage rating over 12v (the supply voltage) it good.

On the ZVS driver you would need a good MKP cap rated for at-least 250vac (due to resonant rise the voltage in crease's.)

Night lol.

Alex.
