Hi,

I've built a medium size DRSSTC, it uses Ward's universal driver and it was working fine, until we tested the same circuit (driver and bridge) on our larger coil. The larger coil run burnt one of the IGBTs, and after we replaced the IGBTs (we tried several IGBTs from the same type) the original coil doesn't seem to work. If we test the driver, we can hear the GDTs voice as normal, but when we apply voltage to the half-bridge it produces one spark, and then nothing. After the spark the GDTs voice disappers almost entirely. If we discharge the capacitors and restart the driver circuit it does the same.

The over-current circuit is turned off so that can't be the problem and the current feedback is in right phase. The primary and the secondary is in tune (it wouldn't produce that spark at the begining).

Does anyone have any idea what can cause a problem like this?

I have often experienced with SSTC and DRSSTC that when a MOSFET or IGBT blows, the gate resistor goes down with it. Try to measure if they are still alright.

Any resistors, zeners or diodes on the output side of the GDT would be a good idea to check.

I think it is on the feed backing circuit, It clamps/stops the oscillation due to phase lead configuration, try swapping the connection of GDT, CT, and PRIMARY one by one. Observe every combination per phase lead connection. But please, do Mad's suggestion first.

Finally, I figured out the problem. It was in the driver's feedback circuit. Two zener diodes were blown and some how the feedback signal turned into a constant high signal, after the first few feedback signals.

Thanks again for the advice!

Good for you, but did you figured out how / why it was blown?

I'm guessing the IGBT failed short circuit and the current went high enough to blow them up.

When IGBTs fail, if they fail with the gate short, it can leave a trail of dead silicon behind it (gate drive IC's, TTL logic, regulators, etc) as each chip may fail with input going low-impedance, drawing enough current from the output of the chip driving it to blow that one.

no igbt blown, we are refering to diodes.

hi zzz_julian_zzz hopefully the diodes didn't crash causing the igbt's to fail since that is responsible for synchronization
