Trouble with 2n3055 flyback circuit.

That circuit doesn't work right as drawn with 2N3055s, so I'm not surprised that it's blowing horizontal output transistors. The BUH517 are only rated for 8A continuous. They'll only take 15A for less than 5 milliseconds. Also, if there isn't enough base current to drive them into saturation, they'll be operating in what is called the linear region. What this means is that they look like resistors and resistors dissipate heat.

There are other better circuits out there. When you find one that works well for you, you'll be blowing flyback transformers instead of transistors.

So if there isn't enough base current to drive the transistors, can I use a MOSFET?
Also what (simple) circuit would you suggest to build? I'm not looking for masses of power, just something that uses 12V and makes arcs.

hi Herry, I like pluging this web sight it has a exalent desription for beginers. After I found the ZVS circuit I'll never go back transistor flyback ciruits.

I have a 2N3055 style driver that I made with the drive transistor from the TV and resistors from the TV. I put a resistor of a few ohms on the base of the transistor and used the flyback transformers internal primary coil with a feedback winding consisting of a few turns of magnet wire on the ferrite core. The whole thing works very well running off a 12V battery. The key to getting the driver to work seems to be finding the transistor from the TV circuit.
