I'm getting a ZVS hopefully. What's the max voltage and amperes you can input to the ZVS? on IRFP250.

Look up the datasheet; And not to be nitpicky, but it's usually referred to as current, not amperes.

Ahh yeah, I'm trying another HOT now rated at 1500v 10A, and the voltage on the flyback only works if you rapidly turn on and off the PSU, so I think this hot is kaput. I'm using the 2n3055 schematic, the transistor gets warm, and the resistor and warmish too.

Either it's broken or it's because it's a Darlington.

Was the point of this thread to help you build a driver or just continue using and repairing your existing Mazzili?

I know, I'm getting one, but is there anyway I can use a HOT to drive a flyback, which is what they're meant to do.

Yes, there is, and it's used in pretty much every TV ;)

Only, one thing you have to realize is, that drawing an arc from a transformer is by no way a load similar from a CRT. If you drive the transformer by a constant duty cycle from a NE555, it's pretty certain that it will go into saturation once you pull an arc from it, resulting in big current pulses which will fry the transistor easily.

Compared to mosfets people seem to use and get away (albeit cooking them huge time) , HOT's are high forward voltage drop devices and very fragile to overcurrent.

Those 2N3055 drivers are even worse, they basically operate by driving the core into saturation. I wouldn't expect any HOT to survive that kind of punishment!

To be able to pull arcs from a flyback-mode driven flyback, you would need current mode control. I guess you don't know what it is though, and can't be bothered to learn either.

You need far more self esteem with electronics, you sound depressed worse than I ever was. This hobby should be a relaxation but to stop it from becoming a pointless money sink you just need to do a bit of research!

I would highly suggest you going to xyz electronics store you have nearby, buying all the parts required for a mazzili driver, assemble them at home and call it a day. If you run it from current limited 12V supply, I'm pretty sure you won't blow it up no matter what you do. You'll be proud once you get something like that to work. :)
