From my understanding, you're not ready to play with mains.
Try building a simple 555 timer oscillator. Get the pinout of the chip, and then find some schematics for it labeled "555 Timer flyback driver". It's easy enough. Just make sure you understand the pinouts of the MOSFET you use, along with the pinout of the 555 timer.

Hi platinum
This sounds more like extreme lack of self esteem and depression more than anything else. If you can indentify parts like mosfets and resistors and know how to conenct a flyback to HF output of an SMPS I have too hard time understanding why you are afraid of building a ZVS driver.
One bit of advice - don't build those NE555 flyback drivers, and similar single-switch whatevers. They just plain suck, and one day soon you'll understand why :)
The 555 is fine...sort of...if you use a gate driver between the 555 and the mosfet....
But then again... a tl494 is much better, it's a lot easier to independently control the frequency and duty cycle, but just as with a 555, you need a gate driver IC.

Hi guys
Please just don't recommend NE555 flyback drivers for beginner projects, OK? They are jet another source of electronics failure depression and their propagators should be punished for heresy!
Now seriously, once you get an understanding of some SMPS and transformer theory you'll realize how bad it is... Of course it is possible to build a very well working flyback converter once you know this all, though you'll probably want to use a proper current mode control chip like UC3842 (I think there's such a circuit around this forum, buried within depths of unsearchableness)
I can't think of a better flyback driver for starters than a mazzili driver. If you use a current limited 12V supply it's practically impossible that you'll blow it up no matter what you do. Hundreds if not thousands of people already replicated the circuit succesfully.
BTW, I've been pondering the possibility of an offline oscillator based on HOT's, but I wouldn't recommend that for a beginner project at all, it's problematic enough for me already!
Stick to low voltage mosfets such as IRFP260's, 250's, 150's, even IRFZ44 and like will work with up to 18V supply or so.

Marko, I have tried the offline driver with HOTs, but they are just so terribly slow (Tstg of around 7us !!) that the waveform gets greatly distorted and the circuit operates inefficiently.

I mainly want a reliable flyback driver, I've powered flybacks from CFL ballasts, SMPS from PC's and other things, from small PSU's from router, phones, chargers, but never any of them were good.

The ZVS driver is the way to go for a reliable flyback driver, trust me!
