Unless the doorknob caps have kVAR rating on them of several tens, they are just as shitty as blue chinese caps regarding dielectric quality.. (it's barium titanate in both cases IIRC). But for use as harsh as SGTC I'm not sure how even reactive power rated doorknobs would work, thin silvering on their terminals might just blow off if you torment them with high pulse currents.
Investing into some CDE caps is pretty much a must if you're serious about coiling, it'll certainly save you a lot of money and hassle.

"Cornell-Dubilier 942" refers to a specific series of capacitors by a specific manufacturer. The Cornell dubilier 942 series film-foil capacitors have a number of attributes that make them ideal for use in a Tesla coil MMC. Specifically, high volatge rating, extremely high pulse current ratings, and a "self-healing" internal construction make them the most popular, and well proven, capacitors for Tesla coil use. The most frequently used value is the 2kV, .15uF model, specifically the 942C20P15K-F. Several sellers offer these on eBay, or they can be purchased directly from Cornell-Dubilier distributors.
See also an MMC design guide for selecting the optimum MMC configuration for your particular NST. For a conventional static spark gap TC, use the LTR column.
Selecting an appropriate capacitor for Tesla coil use is where many people go wrong, trying to use some inexpensive capacitors they found on eBay. Pretty much the ONLY capacitors that will survive in the high-voltage, high-frequency, high-pulse-current environment of a Tesla coil tank circuit are purpose-built pulse capacitors for medical or industrial laser systems, ex-military radar systems, IGBT snubber capacitors, or the C-D 942 caps.
