I remember I got started by building a coilgun and posting about it on Powerlabs forum. What I can't remember is why I originally felt the urge to build a coilgun, and it wasn't because I had the bits already lying around.

When I finally found 4hv, and I saw people building Tesla coils, I thought to myself 'wtf?' and I suppose that's what kept me building things smile Although I haven't built anything for a while now...

It is hard to imagine domestic wiring back then without MCB's!

I still don't have any, my flat has the old rewirable fuses!

I got into HV when I read about Tesla coils on some website or other, probably Richie Burnett's.

My house had those when I moved in, complete with asbestos lining . One day the element in my immersion heater shorted to earth. The fault current was too low to blow the fuse in the outlet or the fuse box. The metal conduit enclosing the 2-core cable was the only earth path, hence the resistance between the outlet and conduit generated enough heat to melt the outlet.

Needless to say I now have circuit breakers and an earth leakage breaker, which would have been tripped by this fault.

My grandfather got me interested in electronics in general, and my preschool teacher was had a masters in Geology and got me interested in other sciences.

My High Voltage in particular got started when I saw an Information Unlimited catalog that a friend had. the tesla coils in particular were fascinating. I didn't think to build one though until in the 5th grade, my form master for the next 8 years happened to be an electronics guy and taught me the basics and of building a tesla coil, and gave me a bunch of advice (like using ignition coil with 12V rather than a NST, which for a 5th grader is a wise decision)

My grandfather gave me a 'cats whisker' crystal radio almost 40 years ago. I've been into electronics ever since. HV is a natural progression for any electronics nut.
