I'm trying to make that driver, I've wired the circuit up correctly, I'm positive of it, with an irf540n. But in teh circuit there's just a straight short across the primary from + tog ground (I'm supposed to connect the negative terminal to ground, right?). So all that happens is my atx psu shuts off or my car battery draws a horrendous amount of current. What have I done wrong? Any help is hugely appreciated.

sorry i didn't realise the pic doesn't work, it's that one. Yes I do have an oscilloscope, the fet doesn't get warm at all because the current just flows straight through the primary to ground. And I do have a CRO but I can't see any point in using it because I know I'm just getting the 12v dc input in to the primary.

The ground connection is in the wrong point. It should be at the negative terminal of the filter capacitor. Or, at least the negative terminal of the (floating in this case) power supply must be there.
