You can put in a lot more energy at higher frequencies.

Whether one needed 'a lot more energy' would depend on the requirements of applications yet to be invented. smile

OAUGDP devices can be miniaturised as well by using modern microcontrollers to generate the required 60 kHz +/- 200Hz waveforms applied to alternate wires of the hdd cable using a pair of CCFL transformers.

Beats using ignition coils and the efficiency is far better.

Again though, the plastic is probably not great for longevity.

Yes, it's best not to take the 'cold' in 'cold plasma' too literally. It can easily mean 2000 K, much more than enough to burn the toast! smile

Afterthought added on: I was thinking about your earlier post where you suggested that higher frequency would allow higher input power - which I guess would be the case were a GD a simple capacitive load.

As it is, the literature shows that electrons can be hearded through DC air-at-atmospheric pressure GDs at a rate of amps, so already the model becomes a lot more complex.

have you ever thought that the glow discharge is produced by very fats pulses of high voltage in a set up similar to a plasma cutter. find a way to make 50 nanosecond pulses @12kv

Yes, there are a number of papers on nanosecond pulse GD phenomena, e.g.

I've seen lots of papers which use short pulses with exposed electrodes to create active species ... but barrier discharge obviously can also be used for the same thing and it's far far simpler.

but barrier discharge won't transmit alot of power like a pulsed short lengh one will

Simplicity and low cost, preferably by using stuff most of us have already - variacs, NSTs, and such - would get my vote too, Pinky - if it were my thread that is! smile
