I find the designs of those glow discharge generators aesthetically displeasing, the vast majority of your energy goes into the ballast resistor.

What does wasted energy have to do with the aesthetics?

It offends my sensibilities ... don't bother asking me why, I'm only going to say because, purely a matter of taste.

I'm not at all concerned with how efficient something is at first. I just want to make it work as expected (or as hoped), and then I'll worry about efficiency later! wink

Hey X-ray, here's another glow discharge setup that looks easy and inexpensive to get into:

Z. Buntat, J. E. Harry and I. R. Smith Generation of a Homogeneous Glow Discharge in Air at Atmospheric Pressure
Elektrika VOL. 9, NO. 2, 2007, 60‐65 Link2

You wouldn't need much more than an NST-variac combo to try out these experiments with perforated electrodes and gauzes.

Wow, another excellent paper on atmospheric plasma! I now have a lot of good stuff to read, and I will certainly "play around" with some of those setups as described in those papers. THANKS AGAIN!!! smile

Another resource is Dr. J. Reece Roth at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His group did the "One Atmosphere Glow Discharge" work back in 90s. There used to be a bunch of papers and a few PhD thesis floating about on the net.

How is that a glow discharge? Seems to me to be a barrier discharge.

DBD and RBD are varieties in the general class of GD.

I remember seeing a patent for an electrode that supposedly produced a glow discharge in air at atmospheric pressure. IIRC, it used moderate dc voltage. I thought I saved it to my HD, but I cannot find it.

I vaguely recall that it was basically a block of aluminum (or something) with an array of small holes - capillary tubes or something like that.

I'm going to try to find it again, but unfortunately any search with the applicable key words brings up over a thousand hits.
