Hm, I wonder if he's going to use 10kV grid directly for his power supply? (would be far more reasonable for this design than thousands of amps at 240V AC). What kind of permissions does one need to make such a tap?

Money.

Most large industrial consumers in Denmark have their own substations, this limits problems with that industry to their own land plot and won't affect the rest of the distribution net.

This is Greg Leyh's Advanced Lightning Facility rebranded.

The towers are, as far as I know, OLTCs. My OLTC work was inspired by Greg's papers on the IGBT modulator he designed at SLAC. He won't confirm or deny it, but as far as I know, the twins he showed at Maker Faire are basically the same as my OLTC2, with a bigger brick and a higher charging voltage provided by a stack of Glassman capacitor charging supplies.

I believe the ALF/Lightning Foundry towers will be the same only a lot bigger still, and the switches will be series strings of electric-train-size IGBT bricks.

The original plans I saw on Lod.org called for the facility to have its own substation with a 12kV, 3 phase feed from the power company.

A locomotive would make an excellent power source, but not many of us have a railway to our high voltage test area. smile If you had to transport it by road, you'd be better just hiring an ordinary generator.

A"10 stories high" Tesla possibly could have Fres near 50-60Hz. (or even lower) Running it straight from the high voltage lines would make a "few" things "easier" :P

Then again, just imagine how loud this thing could get , 50-100 thunder-claps and Several sonic booms per sec! :P

Hm, isn't this like extremely outdated TC technology today? After QWC DRSSTC's and all the madness that got invented over years? Hard to imagine why would anyone even want to bother with an OLTC yet.

I'd contribute 10,000 dollars... if I personally had the money. My dad DOES have the money... but...

a coil that big would take transistors bigger than CM1000 maby 8 of them.the bigest coil to date that I know of is the Golka coil wich was a magnefier. has anybody seen evidence if any thing bigger? A coil that big would require its own indore facility to run it.

I found the parts list on the Kickstarter page. Link2 This makes more since now. I thought at first that this was going to be a spark gap type Tesla coil. It would really suck if the IGTBs got fried.

Yeah, It's kind of a disappointment that even with all the TC technology advancement this is going to be an OLTC... also controlled by 2MVA variac stacks, talk about being old-fashioned.

I agree OLTC is kinda lame... Steve Ward has shown with much grace that a DRSSTC can be build that big rather easily with multiple primaries.

A DRSSTC would be so much more efficient... Oh well. At least it's solid state wink

Well, with all due respect, Steve hasn't built anything quite that big yet! So he hasn't actually showed that the DRSSTC will scale to Lightning Foundry size. The problem is that as you scale up the size, you need to scale the DC bus voltage too. That can only scale so far because of the difficulty of stacking IGBTs in series, so the number of primary turns gets fewer, and eventually you'll reach a point where it's less than 1, even with the finest 3.3kV IGBTs and a 2kV DC bus. (Edit: Looks like the Lightning Foundry is using 4.5kV parts)

However, seeing as his Gigantor will make maybe a 25 foot spark, I think it outperforms Greg's scale models easily. And, as the thing gets bigger its resonant frequency keeps going down, you get to a point where you can use GTO thyristors instead of IGBTs, and those come in really big voltage and current ratings.

If I were a venture capitalist I would give the money to Arc Attack instead.

If you search the TCML archives, you should find some 10 year old posts from me, Steve and Jimmy, poking fun at Greg Leyh for using the OLTC technology.
