What about writing a custom Linux distro for embedded use?
i.e. based on Mandrive or similar, with the drivers for the most common SBC's included in the kernel and a boot menu to select one of N devices and save device state etc.

The uClinux patches were merged into armel debian and emulating uClinux as guest OS is trivial:
The "Xvfb" software is a virtual frame buffer with shared memory capabilities used for headless server remote access. It can also be run in user space for testing application layer GUI programs prior to selecting hardware An undocumented display bug in this demo emerges if some of the X fonts are missing. For iPhone resolutions the entire desktop and Xvfb use around 16MB ram.
Most linux BSPs almost always implement a serial interface (easy shell terminal access) and network interface (easy telnet or ssh access). However, a frame buffer kernel module is not too difficult to implement if the hardware is known to be available long-term, and you can publish it as GPL code: "the major advantage of the framebuffer devices is that it presents a generic interface across all platforms" ( )
Some FPGA vendors will often include a generic svga template as part of the libraries, but almost never offer accelerated 3D support for free.
Cheers, Rod
