It's called torrenting. :P If you search hard enough... also read Tesla: Man out of Time by Margaret Cheney

No, it is called "stealing".

The author is another hobbyist such as yourself, not some giant of industry that is easy to vilify. Whether you choose to pay for the material or not is your business, at least be honest with yourself.

While 'most' hobbyists don't charge fellow hobbyists for information relating to their hobbies, Richard does seem to have made a lot of money from his hobbies over the years.

I'm surprised he hasn't yet made his texts freely available on line to fellow hobbyists in the same manner as the rest of us do, although I'm sure he has his own reasons, and I don't wish to become involved in a 'long debate' on the subject.

I have no qualms about paying someone for their work, especially if I find it to be of benefit smile

The CSN is easy to come by. Mr. Hull's book -was- on Amazon, but seems to be sold out. Electronicspacecraft.com still has an active purchase page, but I also emailed just to be sure. I may also call if enough time goes by.

Ash, such "hand grenade" statements underpinned the reasons you were banned from the Fusor group. If you didn't wish to engage in a debate you would not have said it to begin with.

FWIW - Richard never "charged for information" when the venue was email, phone calls, face to face meetings or anything else. He did however, charge for actual products he produced. Professionally done video tapes and his single foray into publishing. The information contained in both these products was freely shared as is clearly evident in nearly a decade's worth of posting on the TCML.

All that said, regardless of your opinion of Richard (and I realize there is some bad blood between you and the Fusor forum folks) it does not change the fact that this is stealing.

As I said, I don't wish to get dragged into a long debate on the subject.

As you mention the 'fusor group', though, my main criticism regarding that site is the poor quality of moderation there, with moderators not even identifying themselves as such, quite apart from the numerous personal attacks launched against a number of people by their 'chief moderator'.

I realise there have been improvements recently to the way that site is run, but they could still learn more from other sites such as this one, where the standard of moderation is exemplary.

Anyway, let's not let 'past differences' between us become an issue here, Scott. I suggest we 'bury the hatchet'.

(NB, this thread has already served it's purpose, as far as identifying sources for Richard's book, so I trust a few 'off topic' comments regarding other sites where the book's author is prominent won't present too many problems.)

Ash,

Sorry, I didn't mean to convey that I personally had an issue with you although I see that was the tone I put forward. I was more so defending Richard as he has been a good friend for more than two decades now. The Fusor incident I will leave for others as I was not involved.

Personalities aside, my point was that getting this via a Torrent is stealing. When the person being stolen from is a member of a hobby community the risk is that this resource will "go dark". The current absence on this forum of one of the "best and brightest" contributors is testament to the effect.

I agree with you Scott.

I also agree that Richard has made enormous contributions to the hobby community over the years, as I've said on numerous occasions on Fusor.Net, etc.

I distictly remember, however, that you did attack me personally there (a post consisting of several hundred words, in fact), but I'll also concede that the numerous confrontations between 'certain other members' and myself weren't in the best interests of that site and needed to be addressed in some way, in the interests of the majority of users of that site.

It was also a useful experience for me, I've now learned not to get dragged into such disputes on the internet, as they don't serve any beneficial use at all.

I don't recall that incident but I'll go back and look it up. One man's "attack" is often another man's "defense" or "rebuttal". At any rate "peace", no need to continue it here.

I have made my point on the Torrent and will desist from further comment in this thread. We can always continue the discussion about the Fusor net in private if you so wish.

Re: obtaining Richard's book - It appears that Charles Yost's children have managed to legally overturned his will, effectively killing ESJ and of course the ability to order this book. In speaking with Richard he states the book is not available new anywhere at this time.

So much for my argument against downloading it...
