It still looks like 'a lot of steam'. I personally don't buy the 'rainwater' or 'it's only visible because it's cold' explanations.

Perhaps the molten core has bored itself a hole into the earth, and has now reached the water table. That's another explanation I've just read.

I'm sure that someone does have a fairly clear idea what is going on, but they're not saying. There would be another stockmarket melt-down if nuclear industry share prices collapsed.

Where did you read this? I know I suggested this above (a couple of posts ago), but are others also suggesting this?

In The Ecologist here: Link2

There is a good article about Japanese state secrecy and media restrictions around new developments in the disaster here: Link2

Thanks for the link, PM.

I know Radhoo has started sending out his monitors, let's hope he gets some into Japan soon.

We keep being told this:

Lethal levels of radiation and the physical damage to the structure have so far made entry and inspection impossible.

(from The Ecologist article)

But is it true?

There have never been more sophisticated bomb disposal robots than there are now. Remotely controlled vehicles move around on Mars, and death is delivered daily by pilotless aircraft controlled from wealthy countries.

Even if TEPCO had no suitable remote control machinery on the day of the disaster, they could have built some by now - things like bulldozers, tunnel-boring machines, and oxygen lances. I can only guess that they are frightened that any sort of movement in the wreckage might trigger even bigger releases of radioactive material. That being the case, containment is the only option, as at Chernobyl and Windscale.

TEPCO are now saying it will take "40-plus" years to clear up the site - i.e. longer than the lives of the TEPCO directors, Japanese politicians who might be held responsible, and investor portfolios.

Here is another good one: US Navy sailors sue Fukushima owner TEPCO over radiation exposure during aid operation Link2

From what I can find out, the Russian government is even concerned about this, to the extent they have declared all the news on Fukushima to be a state secret.

The problem now is that in the highly likely event of the radiation reaching Europe, public pressure may force the closure of all nuclear plants no matter what their design, which for countries like France would be a national disaster.

We may end up with a situation where nearly all information regarding radiation detection, etc is reclassified and removed from the Net for "public protection" reasons and anyone owning a counter having it confiscated, as has happened in Japan.
Hate to say it but Infowars might be a better option for real news than Fox or CNN or even BBC News right now.

I read something to that effect on an American 'conspiracy' site - but it's not true. Russia Today has a new Fukushima story today : Link2

From what I've read recently, the Russians are the only ones who are reporting it 'as it is'. (as mentioned in my fifth or sixth post to last, dated 5-01-14, depending on your location)

It says a lot about our country that we have to look to foreign news broadcasters to find out what is going on in the world.
