I wonder how they do measure becquerels from high altitude...
this must be satellite data (I used to plot such from IASI) because I cannot see how they would have achieved ground measurements over that area, and none of the interpolations of matlab or matplotlib would have given such a fine granularity

The map is in the article pointed to by PM, excerpt; "Since the 2011 Fukushima accident, researchers from the Bedford Institute of Oceanography have been sampling waters along a line running almost 2,000km due west of Vancouver, British Columbia."

from the pic i qouted, the black dots in a line, were locations of physical samples taken. And the color plume was a computer model prediction. i believe there wanting to validate the time and location of the contaminated water.
this bot is prett interesting... can CCD's be made sensitive to gamma rays? without killing them? I know i can see IR LEDs with my cameras. But i presume Xray and gamma ray are more destructive.
Packbot
Packbot, developed by iRobot, has also been used for systematic radiation survey inside the Fukushima reactor buildings.
Packbot uses two dosimeters (mounted at heights of 50mm and 1500mm above the floor) and gamma cameras (which compare the radiation field to a photographic image). Data gathered by the robot is used to create continuous 3D contamination maps. It was deployed at Fukushima units 1&3 in June 2012.

I didn't look carefully enough sorry
I'm not that convinced of such techniques for interpolating that amount of data... one line of 2000km is not sufficient in my opinion to produce that prediction even if they based their model on oceanic current etc...
even, do they take into account evaporation which should carry in itself its share of irradiated elements? what if the wheather is extremely hot over a 100km square area for a week, then everything is jet-streamed over a mountain chain and rains in a row of valleys 20km wide and is then drained to a local river which feeds people?
this is not to be underestimated... when I worked with IASI we published a paper in Nature about plumes of NH3 generated solely by evaporation of the fertilizing rich waters of the plains pushed to a mountain chain and accumulated by vertical upward winds creating a vertical column creating equivalent levels as a big industrial zone, while it was pure natural jungle

There is an international effort underway to track Fukushima marine pollution involving a number of oceanographic vessels.

The US Navy knew: Fukushima's 'hard rain' on USS Ronald Reagan - News - The Ecologist
The idea that a modern warship wouldn't be immediately aware of a major radiation hazard on its own decks is so silly that you wouldn't think a Freedom of Information access request would be needed to prove it. Lawyers, politicians, and their media enablers, live in a different world where whatever they say is true.
