I don't want to get too drawn away from Fukushima, but something has happened today which raises questions about the UK goverment's choice of contractors for its nuclear power station building programme.

Bam Nutall, one of the main private companies contracted to build new nuclear power stations at Dungeness 'A' and Wylfa
has today managed to flood one of the London Underground control rooms with cement.

well, excess cement will make them well qualified for the disasters likely to follow.

in any case, what is the wind borne travel time for Japan to California? im hearing 6 days but is this credible?

BAM and other affiliates are involved in way too much work in my opinion.. I see them multiply contracts everywhere in Belgium even in small towns which are in deficit

it means for me that they are cutting their costs at the maximum level and speeding up things in order to gain tha maximum number of contracts they can, which will lead inevitably to some catastrophic events in the future

I worked as a contractor consultant and I know what damage can be caused when you cut too much on an offer... you reduce hours, reduce quality, workers get higher stress, are more prone to failure, and it means errors and flaws... at the expense of security etc...

such companies are proud to say they are social references, commercial references and the like, but the only reason my former employer was able to tell they never fired anyone during years of crisis, is that they had a natural turnover rate which was sufficient for them to only need to pay low salaries for youg workers and it was the way they managed to be a "social reference"... while heaps of employers were suffering in silence with depression and overwork ^^

More worrying than the incident itself is the automatic reflex to lie to the public about what is going on rather than admit liability. The public are told the line is closed due to 'flooding', and are only prompted to tell the truth when photos are published online by a whistleblower - the very model of nuclear industry media management in the UK. Democracy is undermined when the citizen is denied the facts around which informed choice can be made.

Jet stream speeds are high is all I know on that - but let's not get distracted by the media's preferred disaster story model where an event has a definite beginning, which Fukushima has, and a dramatic climax, such as the arrival in the US of a big fat Cs fallout cloud triggering panic exodus from the Pacific seaboard.

Far more likely, but non-news, is the slow, insidious, poisoning of the sea, resulting in an almost invisible - except to statisticians - excess cancer mortality which whether delivered by sea, or by air or through food is how death still comes from the A-bomb tests of the 1950s, from the tailings of derelict mines, from the Windscale, Kyshtym and Chernobyl disasters, from hushed-up leaks into goundwater and rivers, and who knows how many thousands of episodes of declared and undeclared dumpings at sea since 1945.

Scientists: Cosmic rays can see through nuclear reactor, locate fuel - AJW by The Asahi Shimbun Link2

Haven't I mentioned a possible role for cosmic rays in this thread in the last 36 hours? How very prescient of me! cheesey

Notice the admission that no one knows the location of the corium - a sure sign that it is considered so 'tricky' (as sweating sticks of Dynamite were said to be 'tricky' by old time miners) that no one dare disturb it in even the smallest way by drilling fine holes through which probes and endoscopes could be inserted.

Surely some form of 'directional detector' (a geiger counter inside a lead tube?) would detect it, unless it's already 'deep underground', or am I mistaken?

Most of the corium radiation will be attenuated by the concrete foundations, and then the whole environment is heavily contaminated, so I imagine that whatever small signal may escape through all the concrete and earth will be drowned in the noise from the contamination and leakages all over the place.

Rumors about zeolite miracles spark after Fukushima disaster Link2

"To say the truth, in my opinion, the best means against the consequences of radiation is… dry red wine. Wine spirits egest free radicals, that form in a human’s organism as a result of radiation, very well. Besides, red wine in small amounts is healthy for the organism. However, people are not always satisfied with simple solutions"

I suppose this makes some sense. I consume copious amounts of anti-oxidants anyway, as I'm convinced of their benefits regarding eliminating 'free radicals', and I'm certain they just 'make you feel better' anyway, although too much red wine doesn't always result in the 'feel good factor'.

How realistic is the above statement that red wine is the best means against the consequenses of radiation?

As Small, I think they meant, if you ingested radioactive substances, it would be best to drink, because most paths workout to your stuffed....
