are there any ways of making it work with a ssnst? Im limited when it comes to spending. im limited to the 99 dollar range
Not likely. Most turn themselves off if the load is anything other than a neon lamp. eBay has several OBIT's for a reasonable price. Search "ignition transformer". They look like this:

Hi,
well, my best bet on using a SSNST would be rectifying it and filtering it soemhow (might be tricky, would probably need to charge the filter cap over a resistor which you short out later) and then using this for a DC resonant charging system... but for a first coil this is way too complex and probably more expensive than just buying a new nst. And in the end the nst might end up turning off from the interference of the coil no matter what you do!
From other side, flybacks, ignition coils and even most of driver components might be available to you almost for free, so it's on you whether you want to choose a spending curve or learning curve there. Iron power supplies for TC's are going to cost $$ no matter what you do, and shipping from ebay will be expensive.
If you can find any neon sign shops around you might get lucky to get some transformers far cheaper than that.

Hi electrikid,
don't waste your time with 2N3055's and NE555's, as in short they suck. The "mazzili" flyback driver is about the same complexity as the 2N3055 one with collosally better results.
