I have only sanded the pipe down to get rid of dirt, bumps etc. I never used anything underneath to make it stick better. For pauses I just used electrical tape to secure the loose end of the wire. Place a piece of electrical tape on the already wound coil for every 3-4 centimetre, will spare you the time if it snaps again.

the hardest part is getting it started, like it always ends up crooked and UGH idfk, maybe a diagram on how to start the winding would help :?

I used a hot glue gun and cable ties. Heres what my jig looked like:
Oltc007 Winding Jig

I put a band of cable ties around the form and measured a fixed distance from the base of the coil, then glued it into place. Then I just had to start winding right up against the cable ties.
Oltc004 Cableties

As I wound the coil, I'd put a small strip of hot glue on the every 15-20 turns. So if I did screw up, and it did start to unwind, i would only lose a few turns. Once finished, I peeled the glue off and put several coats of varnish.

good spark gap electrodes can be found in old floppy drives

5mm dia in 5 1/4 " drives, 3mm dia in 3 1/2 " drives

just be cautious when you saw/grind those as tungsten carbide may float in the air, which is very bad for your lungs
