Flyback produces a higher voltage output per volt of input because the primary freewheels when the transistor stops conducting, and the inductive kickback generates a high voltage like with an ignition coil.
Extreme voltages can be produced with any driver running at the resonant frequency of the flyback. Once i had a halfbridge with 80vdc input drive a big flyback from a rear projection screen TV and i drove it at it's resonant freq. Needless to say, the diodes within the flyback died quickly, and i got breakout on the secondaries wires, enough to consider it streamers. They where probably an inch long.
Amazingly, the secondary never failed. The outside of the flyback started carbon stracking after a few seconds of no load on the flyback's secondary.

It's better to think of current than voltage with a flyback, when it flies back the secondary current becomes the primary current divided by the turn ratio (assuming a high coupling factor and the primary switch and the insulation not giving out first).
PS. once the diodes are gone it's nothing more than a high turn ratio transformer.

Well, I'm currently working on making a half bridge driver and a flyback mode driver. I think I might try the series resonant thing, like what dude_500 said. It'd be easy to take out the capacitor if it doesn't work right; Then I can just tune it to the resonant frequency and boom, high voltage surprise.
With the single transistor driver, I'm going to fool around with a bit to see how well I can make it run.
