The aforementioned have contributed financially to the continuing triumph of 4hv.org. They are deserving of my most heartfelt thanks.
Okay, so my girlfriend is always buying me little gifts, and I think it's time I give something in return. I was originally just gonna do a basic plasma speaker...but that's not good enough for my Katie (:
My idea is to build a small tesla coil, and audio modulate it to play "our" song. I planned on using a 22mm diameter secondary wound with around 800 turns of 40 gauge wire on it. It will have a resonant frequency of 2.2MHz without a topload. I'll probably add a small toroid to lower that a bit though...
The driver will basically be Steve Ward's DRSSTC .5 driver, except the 2 driver chips will be replaced by one driver chip. It's a UCC27425P, which is a 4A dual driver. It has one inverting and one non-inverting driver with individual enable pins. I'll be using an H-bridge of IRF640's for switching.
The audio modulation will be the fun part...I wanna be able to have a chip to hold the song and be able to play it back by pushing or flipping a switch...but so far I haven't found anything I could use...any ideas guys?
The output of that...whatever it would be, would run through the hex inverter, and then into the enable pins on the driver chip, basically being the interrupter signal.
I have all the parts for the driver, the primary, and secondary...but idk how to do the audio modulation...cause I want her to be able to just flip a switch and hear the song...so I'm determined to find a chip to do it, even if I pay like 20 bucks for the thing...
If anything I've stated isnt gonna work or doesn't make sense please say something!! :)

Presumably you'll want a "midi" audio source (be it actual midi protocol, or some other note-on-off protocol). This can be achieved with an arduino. It is not easy (and sometimes not possible depending on the coil size) to get a drsstc to play a true audio file such as an MP3.
@dude500, while I may be using a DRSSTC driver I'm probably not gonna actually make it a DRSSTC. I'll just leave the resonant cap out, to keep it a normal ISSTC.
I really wanna get something that can be built on the board that will play the song. I'm basically gonna be building EVERYTHING the board and making it look really nice. So I wanna stay away from MP3 players if at all possible

well maybe the record your own message gift card is the way to go then. if you want it to look nice you could always gut some other component (like a electrolytic or box capacitor) and stick the mp3/gift card stuff inside and no one would ever know.
I think I figured it out, I was browsing around a site and found this. All the parts for it can be bought right from digikey, except for the main chip, that can be bought from ebay - VS1003 One problem I see however is...how do I make it play the music?...

You can use a VCO (such as the one in 4046) to produce a true full frequency range audio modulation, but I'm not sure the 4046 would work at such a high frequency....
