Well, you could also implement it using one of those LED dimmer circuits using a 555 timer as well, I think. Just use one color then! You could probably try to use two driving one string of LED's, making a sort of pulsey look to them. It would be really neat!

This may help you out! The leads on the in-16 are "fly leads" not solid pins. If your circuit board holes are close to the tube diameter then it should work just fine. Remember the bigger the diameter "of the hole pattern" the higher the tube will need to sit above the board to accommodate the bend needed to hit the holes.
Edit: Those are millimeters by the way! I wish they were in inches but sadly, they're not....

You can get a pretty reasonable translation via Google Translate - I use a Russian Alphabet site to bang in the characters and Google does an OK job...

That seems right, in the drawing i gave you the whole tube diameter is only 13 mm. These tubes are sometimes called "mini". Still very cool tubes though, very warm glow and good color!

Right then, I made the alternate part in eagle that can fit both tubes, did some fancy pin/pad connection to get everything working right, and am almost 4/5 of the way through a total schematic revision, I had to break the one giant schematic up into 5 little modules (power, seconds, minutes, hours, logic), mainly to comply with eagles size limit and also because it's not a bad idea in general. All the sections will be connected by 10 or 16 pin ribbon cable. Things being panel mounted to the front (indicator LED, rotary switches, power switch) will have to be point to point wired to the board. Schematic (not broken up) available here-
