All is good and I had no need for this device, but I've finished the project and also added an electric ignition system, using the small module posted here:
It's a simple 9V -> 10KV converter, that will produce plenty of discharges to lit the gas. Now a single push of a button shoots out flames.

How long before a pressurized can of contact cleaner, or WD-40 and a BIC lighter are made illegal then?
Depends how you swing it!
"(b)any weapon of whatever description designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing;"
This is a very vague description, and implies that if you discharged a can of deodorant at someone, either willfully of through negligence, you could end up prosecuted under the firearms act!
The key word here is "weapon", and I think a good enough lawyer could have argued and won on behalf of this client.
To prosecute someone under the firearms act for this daft stunt, is nothing short of ludicrous.
Interestingly, a "flame gun" can be purchased at any garden centre in this country, for the purpose of incinerating weeds! It looks like, and functions like.... a full blown flame thrower, and is fueled by paraffin. Should not this item fall under the firearms act then?
The creation of vague laws like this is a very serious problem in this country, even if you are engaged sensible hobbies, you can fall foul of some prats interpretation of the law.
I seem to remember an Amateur Microscopist down south having all his equipment confiscated, because some numpty came out with a twisted version of some law.
My advice to anyone legitimately doing electronics, physics or chemistry as a hobby in this country is, if some berk reports you for "terrorism" or whatever, and the police come calling, get a lawyer.
Or better still as Proud Mary once suggested to me, make a list of all your gear, and lodge copies with a Solicitor, Pharmacist, GP, and the Police. So that in the event of any complaint, you at least come across as responsible.

I have a beautiful old Hilti nailgun that is basically a barrel and trigger short of being a firearm. It even takes .25 rimfire blanks. I have never run into any trouble with it and it`s completely legal. Funny old world.
