Where I've been might be of interest since this is a thread about mobile tesla coils...
I've been working on a nice big handheld coil - about chainsaw sized, running a 400V DC link, powered from an 18V Ryobi cordless tool battery.
It'll use a motor generator to get the high voltage rail because the coil is going to be steampunk themed. So far, I'm exploring ways to detect the grounding strap running down my leg is a suitable RF path to earth.
I'll likely use a 13.56MHz carrier and detect amplitude of it. I can bandpass the crap out of it so it'll even work when the coil is on...that way if I take a step or ground gets compromised - it'll turn off. If I'm passing a lot of 13.56MHz to ground - I should be able to detect it.
Here's the coil so far. I wish I could spin a brass toroid but I just don't have a big enough shop (yet) :) I would make it like PWMphysics's coil on youtube - but SOTCs are so bursty and nowhere near as impressive in real life. Cameras really seem to highlight the arcs. Anyone else notice this?
The discharge electrode is a brass turning again (actually, several soldered together) - but I've not polished it up and given it a final clearcoat of poly just yet - so it has smudges :(
